There are two types of phase transformation:

• diffusional transformations: these use the slow movement of atoms (or vacancies) over long distances (greater than the interatomic distance)

• diffusionless transformations: these use sudden, small amplitude movement of atoms (smaller than the interatomic distance). This is the case of the martensitic transformation
